BIOGRAPHY

I am an author and journalist. During two decades of covering international news, I reported on the end of the Soviet Union; the wars in Chechnya; the coming to power of Vladimir Putin; 9/11; the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; the 2003 war in Iraq; Russia’s war with Georgia in 2008. I completed correspondent postings for the BBC in Moscow, Brussels, and Gaza. I now teach in the Journalism Department at City St George’s, University of London.

‘The Return of Russia’: live events on my new book, Spring 2026

This latest post is on upcoming events about my new book The Return of Russia: from Yeltsin to Putin, the Story of a Vengeful Kremlin. In the coming weeks, I will be Birmingham, in Chiswick, west London, in Derby, and in Bristol.

The book is a concise political history of Russia and its relations with the West since the end of the Cold War. It explains how cooperation turned to renewed conflict, bringing to Europe a war that has also affected so many other parts of the world.

On April 15 at 19.30, I will be in conversation with Nanette van der Laan, senior producer at Channel 4 News, in the Boston Room of the George IV pub on Chiswick High Road, London W4 2DR. More details and tickets here. The event is organized by the Chiswick Calendar‘s media club. I will be signing books afterwards.

On May 28, at 17.30, I will be at the Derby Book Festival. You can get tickets for that event here.

On June 4 at 19.30., I will be taking part in a Philosophy Salon at St George’s, Bristol. That evening, I will be talking to the philosopher Julian Baggini, and the author Michael Scott-Baumann, on ‘History as a Weapon.’ More details here. I was invited to take part after recording an interview with Julian for this Radio 4 programme, Archive on 4 – The Narrative Trap – BBC Sounds broadcast earlier this year, and still available on BBC Sounds.

Before all those, on Friday 10 April at 16.45, I will be at the University of Birmingham. That event is part of the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies (BASEES) annual conference.

I will always try to accept invitations to come to talk about my work, so please get in touch if you are interested. You can email chloe.foster@yaleup.co.uk or reportingconflict@hotmail.com.

And you can listen to my latest radio interview on the book, with Paul O’Doherty on Dublin City FM’s Bookbound programme here.

My thanks to everyone who has bought the book so far.
