BIOGRAPHY

I am an author and journalist. During two decades of covering international news, I reported on the end of the Soviet Union; the wars in Chechnya; the coming to power of Vladimir Putin; 9/11; the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; the 2003 war in Iraq; Russia’s war with Georgia in 2008. I completed correspondent postings for the BBC in Moscow, Brussels, and Gaza. I now teach in the Journalism Department at City, University of London.

Live Book Event: ‘Assignment Moscow’ at the Frontline Club, London. March 1st

My first live, in-person, event to discuss ‘Assignment Moscow’ will be at the Frontline Club in London on March 1st, 2022. If you are in London that evening, please come along. There are more details here , including how to book tickets.

The book tells the story of the way western correspondents have reported the major events in the last century of Russian history, from the revolutions of 1917, to the ‘show trials’ of the Stalin era, to World War II, the Cold War that followed, and the collapse of the Soviet state in 1991.

The period since includes parts of my own experience covering Russia since the early 1990s, including the end of the USSR; the wars in Chechnya; and the rise to power of Vladimir Putin.

There are more details about the book here–including reviews and an extract–on the website of Bloomsbury, the publisher. The book is currently on sale with a 20% discount.

I hope to see you on March 1st.
